I was curious… how many numbers can we remember? What affects our short-term memory’s ability to store and recall numbers? I coded a game that tests your ability to recall 10 numbers after a short amount wait time. Data was collected and analyzed from 3 different biology classes from more than 50 participants. Three versions of the game randomly serve a variation of the test with a) distractions, b) coaching, or neither distractions or coaching (a control) to measure impact on short term memory.
In the summer of 2025, I participated in SciMI, the Scientific Research Mentorship Institute, a six-week national program that teaches high-school students the methods and ethics of scientific research. With an acceptance rate of about 10%, the program was highly selective. I was part of the Computer Science Research Cohort, supervised by W. Jardee, a Ph.D. candidate in Computer Science. During the program, I conducted secondary research on memory studies and examined how experimental design and ethics could be strengthened in my earlier project, which tested how distraction and mid-task coaching affect short-term memory. My focus included how to expand the study responsibly to a broader audience with more diverse representation and proper release procedures. I presented my findings at the SciMI National Symposium in the summer of 2025.
